Under His Umbrella of Love…

UMBRELLA MINISTRIES was founded in 1996, with the sole purpose of helping mothers through their grief of losing a child. Since its beginning Umbrella Ministries has offered comfort, hope and encouragement to thousands of mothers across the United States, including Alaska and Canada.

Grieving the death of a child can be a painful and lonely struggle. Working through such anguish requires tremendous effort, patience, faith and hope. Umbrella Ministries assists bereaved mothers through this difficult period with support, encouragement and love. If you have experienced the loss of a child, you need not grieve alone — we understand and we’re here for you.

The ministry began because two women responded to the call of a still small voice and followed God’s leading to start Umbrella Ministries to help grieving moms.

Daisy Catchings-Shader Founder
Daisy serves as Chairman of Umbrella Ministries, a non-profit organization that reaches out to women who have experienced the loss of a child. Daisy’s life was forever changed when she and her husband, Dick, suffered the loss of their only child Danny who died suddenly with a heart attack. After coming to terms with her loss, her greatest desire was to help other moms through their loss. Daisy has served in Christian ministry for twenty-five years as Area and Regional Representative for Stonecroft Ministries, Christian Women’s Club Chairman and Bible teacher. She is an inspirational and motivational speaker at conferences throughout the United States. Daisy is an author and member of Christian Writer’s Guild. She currently serves on the Board of Women’s Ministries at Southwest Community Church

From the Heart of Donna Luke, Umbrella Ministries Co-Founder …
It was the fall of 1995 when my husband’s job moved me hundreds of miles from my best friend.  Her name was ‘Daisy’ and over the five years I lived in Palm Springs we were there for one another through happy and difficult times.  Her friendship blessed not only myself but brought my whole family closer to the Lord.

It was shortly after we moved I bought a book binding machine thinking it would be fun to have (not knowing exactly what I was going to do with it). It was the first of January 1996 Daisy shared with me how she felt the nudging from the Lord to take the journal “Under God’s Umbrella” down from the shelf that had sat there for several years since her husband Dick suffered a massive stroke.  Her journal was filled with letters she wrote to Danny, her only child, who passed away at the age of 28.  As she wrote many mornings at 4:00 am, with tears running down her face, she felt God’s unexplainable “peace that passes understanding” (Philippians 4:7).  When she shared with me how she would love to share her journal filled with faith, hope and the healing love of God with other mothers who have lost a child I said I would love to type it up and bind it with my new machine.  It was just a month later I went to San Diego with Daisy as she spoke at a woman’s retreat and we shared her new bound book with other moms who had experienced the loss of a child.  On our way home we were so blessed to see how the Lord used  “Under God’s Umbrella” bringing hope to several grieving mothers over the weekend.  We stopped for lunch and on a napkin we wrote out how God had filled our hearts with the desire to start a ministry reaching out to grieving moms and calling it Umbrella Ministries.  Now twenty-one years later and an incredible board, Umbrella Ministries has touched the lives of thousands of heartbroken moms.

Just before Umbrella Ministries’ 20th anniversary my precious daughter Kim went home to be with the Lord from a cerebral aneurysm.  God is such an incredible God as Daisy was with me when Kim passed away.  She had come to Montana to share with heartbroken moms at a “Journey of the Heart” conference that was scheduled on the day we celebrated Kim’s life.  Now I truly know the heartbreak a mom feels and the healing arms of my Heavenly Father as I am under His umbrella of love.  My love and heart goes out to every grieving mom who has lost a child.

“He comforts us in all our troubles so that we can comfort others. When they are troubled, we will be able to give them the same comfort God has given us.” 2 Corinthians 1:4

Umbrella Ministries has no paid staff. Because of their own personal losses each of our wonderful Board members serves out of love for God and for each of the Moms who cross their paths. They are a dedicated group of incredible women and we thank God for each one of them and the hundreds of hours they give from their hearts.
